Guard shot in van attack
A security guard is in hospital, after he was shot in the stomach, during an attempted raid on a van.
The shooting took place outside a bank in Kilmarnock on Tuesday evening.
The Brinks Mat security van had pulled up outside a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland and approximately 8.50pm when two men approached.
One of the men opened fire with what is believed to have been an unlicenced pistol, wounding the 48-year-old guard in the stomach.
The guard was taken to hospital where he remains; doctors have described his condition as stable.
The suspects escaped in a silver BMW which was later found burnt out in a car park in Irvine.
They did not manage to steal anything from the scene of the shooting and it remains unclear if the motive of the attack was, in fact, robbery.
Detective Inspector Brian Semple, the officer in charge of the investigation, told the Press Association: "This was a particularly horrendous and unprovoked attack on a security guard who was going about his business. At this time we are carrying out forensic examination and studying CCTV footage of the area."
The incident illustrates that for anyone who uses a security van, insurance (vehicle and health) is essential.
