The current road conditions may be treacherous not only because they are covered in ice and snow, but also because of the rising number of potholes hidden below the surface.
According to website Potholes.co.uk, increasing numbers of people have been visiting the site to report potholes in their area.
The portal provides contact details for many councils across the country and urges motorists to get in touch to report holes in their local roads.
Potholes may be increasing in number as ice expands in cracks and damages the road's surface
"We've seen a surge in people visiting the site and sadly we're hearing the same stories again and again - people are hitting craters caused by icy conditions and already poor road quality and they are having to pay out for new wheels and tyres," commented Duncan McClure Fisher of Warranty Direct, which established the website in 2007.
Drivers may need to take extra care to avoid the holes or risk having to claim on their caravan insurance policies for damage to their vehicles.
The Scunthorpe Telegraph recently reported that council officers are having to take emergency action to fix rising numbers of potholes across north Lincolnshire after the icy conditions caused excessive damage.
