Motorists planning to take their mobile home out on the roads might want to check the vehicle's wheel alignment to avoid caravan insurance claims.

According to wheel safety organisation TyreSafe, the recent icy snap is likely to have adversely affected road surfaces, resulting in a greater number of potholes and potentially damaging cracks that were already formed.

The holes in the road can pose a number of issues to motorists, the group suggests.

"If a car's wheels are not correctly aligned it may pull to one side or cause vibrations in the steering wheel which can be distracting and make the vehicle difficult to control," warned Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.

Figures from the AA cited by the organisation showed claims for potholes damage rose by more than 250 per cent during the heavy snow of last February.

Mr Jackson went on to suggest consumers have their vehicle wheels checked at a garage, which will also look at the tread depth and pressure in addition to alignment.

Cuts and bulges in tyres can indicate damage, he added.

Website Potholes.co.uk recently reported a surge of visitors to its website, as founder Duncan McClure Fisher suggested "the new year's 'pothole season' is well and truly upon us".
