Caravan insurance policyholders might wish to take note of some new regulations being introduced this month to avoid being caught out by police on the road.

From January 26th, cars must have mirrors on both the driver's and passenger's side of the car. If the mirrors are under two metres above ground, they cannot extend more than 25 centimetres from the width of the vehicle, Bude People reports.

Speaking to the publication, a spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said the legislation is being introduced to ensure people towing trailers have a good view of what is behind them.

The representative commented: "One way drivers may be caught out is if they are towing a caravan which is considerably wider than the car."

If the mirrors stick out more than the allowed 25 cm when the caravan is detached, this could put other road users in danger.

The publication urged drivers to remember to remove the extended mirrors once they have detached their trailer.

Website Caravan-Advice.co.uk urges mobile home owners to try out mirrors at a caravan accessory shop before buying them to ensure they fit the car, as not all will.
