Occupancy rates at caravan parks could be set to increase this year as figures have shown the staycation trend is not budging.

Statistics from the Camping and Caravanning Club have highlighted that year-to-date occupancy is almost seven per cent ahead of last year's figures, with advance bookings having soared by 16 per cent.

The firm's director general Robert Louden commented that those who thought the staycation was just a fad should think again, as the club recruited 25 per cent more members last year compared with figures from 2008.

"We are therefore optimistic that both campers and caravanners will be looking to repeat that experience in 2010," he said, adding: "The early signs look encouraging."

According to the club, sites in Oxford, Corfe Castle in Dorset, Polstead in Suffolk, Charmouth, Ashbourne, Slingsby in North Yorkshire, Teversal in Nottinghamshire and Scarborough have all seen increases in bookings.

"We recruited 65,000 members last year and were able to provide a memorable and lasting experience for both members and non-members alike," Mr Louden said.

Last December the club announced that 2009 had been its best trading year since its inception in 1901, breaking all its membership recruitment records.
