A gang of criminals responsible for a spike in caravan insurance claims have been convicted of theft.

Four members of an organised crime gang based in Wiltshire were found to have stolen caravans and other vehicles to the tune of more than £1 million.

The four criminals, aged between 20 and 31, were arrested in 2007 following raids as part of an investigation that had begun in 2005.

Commenting after the recent trial at Winchester crown court, detective inspector Matt Davey told the BBC: "The court has heard how this wasn't simply the thefts of caravans but also the theft of people's personal and often irreplaceable possessions."

As part of the investigation it had also been discovered the gang had taken items of jewellery, china and crystal as well as the vehicles.

Mr Davey went on to say that the group had had a profound effect on the insurance industry in terms of claims, with the market reporting "a 47 per cent reduction in caravan thefts in the year following their arrest".

The incidents may highlight the need for caravan insurance to help protect against cases of theft.

Gang members have been remanded in custody until sentencing, which will take place in March.
