Good home insurance provides relief in a storm
As global warming continues to be a huge source of controversy, the need for home insurance to provide assurance against its worst effects weather-wise grows stronger and stronger.
Although Britain is not subject to the sort of hazardous conditions seen when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the American coast last August, the floods of last year and the drought set to hit the south-east this summer show that this island has adverse weather of its own.
The need for Britain to take precautions of all sorts against the steadily worsening weather was emphasised by former US president Bill Clinton on Saturday, when he told an audience in Texas that there was a need for everyone to work towards dealing with this threat.
Speaking at the University of Texas' Lyndon B Johnson School of Public Affairs, Mr Clinton warned: "Climate change is more remote than terror but a more profound threat to the future of the children and the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren I hope all of you have.
"It's the only thing we face today that has the power to remove the preconditions of civilized society."
The need British householders have for a good home insurance policy was perhaps best demonstrated in January 2005, when gales and torrential rain afflicted the Cumbria region and 1,700 properties were flooded in Carlisle alone.
