A caravan security and identification scheme helped police in their investigations when uncovering the large-scale mobile thefts carried out by a Wiltshire gang, it has emerged.
The four criminals, who were recently convicted following a trial at Winchester crown court, were found to have committed numerous caravan-related thefts in the recent years.
Police were able to access valuable details to help their investigations through the National Caravan Council's (NCC) Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRiS), tracking firm HPI has said.
Detective Inspector Matt Davey of Wiltshire Police commented that evidence presented to the court focused on 50 offences related to caravan theft but there were also many other incidents.
He recently told the BBC that insurance claims for caravan thefts in the year following the gang's arrest reduced by 47 per cent.
"CRiS is a crucial component of police force investigations into leisure vehicle crime," said John Lally, director general of the NCC.
Alan Bishop, industry relations director at HPI, urged all mobile home owners to conduct CRiS checks before buying a caravan, as this may indicate whether the model has previously been written off by a caravan insurance provider.
"The CRiS number should be etched on the windows of the caravan," he added.
