Van drivers need good insurance policies

However safe they feel on the road, van drivers should avoid being overconfident and instead make sure they have a good van insurance policy, a survey has shown.

A joint-study compiled by Brake and Green Flag showed that van and car drivers generally feel safer behind the wheel than in any other transport, with one in three respondents feeling more secure while driving than on a plane, train or ferry.

This is in spite of car and van occupants being 27 times more likely to be killed per km travelled than air and rail passengers combined and a spokesperson for Green Flag claimed this illustrated the need for Britain to become "a nation of 'safe drivers'".

Moreover, motorists appear to realise that cars and vans are actually quite dangerous, with only 19 per cent actually claiming cars really are the safest form of transport - making their overconfidence behind the wheel all the more puzzling.

Mary Williams, chief executive of Brake, warned: "Drivers clearly have a false sense of invulnerability when driving a car, which they actually know isn't real.

"If people deceive themselves about the inherent dangers of driving this may explain incessant risk-taking on the road and the daily death toll. About nine of ten crashes are due to driver error."

Ms Williams also highlighted the fact that 130 people are killed on Britain's roads every fortnight and rather than thinking that the same thing could not happen to them when they are behind the wheel, motorists should instead "drive with extreme caution and humility today and tomorrow and beyond".
