A dejected man who slept in someone else's caravan after rowing with his partner has been charged with burglary.

The Hartlepool Mail reports that Andrew Hunt, aged 24, was thrown out by his girlfriend and wandered the streets before stumbling upon an open caravan parked outside a house.

Hunt discovered food inside the vehicle, Hartlepool magistrates' court heard, which he helped himself to.

In fact, the man was only found after police identified his fingerprints on a jar of mayonnaise.

Magistrates were asked to consider giving Hunt a supervision order to help him overcome issues with alcohol.

He was given a nine-month community order and instructed to attend an alcohol intervention programme for nine days, as well as having to pay £40 costs.

The incident may offer a stark warning for Britons who fail to invest in caravan insurance for their mobile homes, who could potentially find more missing than a few biscuits one day.

Caravan insurance policyholders might also want to consider fitting their mobile homes with an alarm to warn them when burglars are in the vicinity.
