A mobile home park may not be the place one would expect to encounter one of the country's rarest birds, but caravan insurance policyholders in Skegness may have beaten the odds.

Member of the heron family, a Bittern was recently discovered in fishing line at Pinetrees Leisure Park, the East Coast Target reports.

The rare bird is likely to have been looking for food when it became tangled in the line, as the birds feed on insects, fish, reptiles and amphibians at reedbeds and marshy areas.

Upon finding the distressed bird on February 12th, the park's Simon Dodsworth contacted Roger Wardle from the Lincolnshire Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group to attend the scene and help free the creature.

The Bittern was captured and freed from the line but was too weak to fly when Mr Wardle tried to release it.

To ensure the bird's health was protected, it was taken to Fenwold Veterinary Practice in Spilsby and then on to Mablethorpe Seal Sanctuary to recover before being released.

The Guardian recently reported that freezing conditions on the continent have prompted record numbers of Bitterns to fly to UK to seek warmer climes.
