Caravan insurance policyholders have been given a lesson in holiday park rules after a Scottish man was reprimanded for burning waste at a caravan park.
Andrew Young, a project manager at Barry Downs Holiday Park, was fined £500 at Arbroath Sheriff Court for burning waste at the site, the Guide and Gazette reports.
Members of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) had been driving past the park in January 2009 when they noticed black smoke coming from the site.
Investigating the plumes, the officers found two fires burning at the mobile home facility, one from lit wood and the other burning waste such as metal and plastic.
Young was made aware of the offence, but when the agency workers returned the next day, they found three fires burning and the remains of another blaze being loaded into a skip.
"Burning mixed waste in an uncontrolled way can release toxic substances into the atmosphere which can cause detrimental health effects in humans," warned Graham Ross, Sepa's investigating officer.
Many mobile home sites provide facilities for caravan insurance policyholders to use when disposing of waste, including wheelie bins and skips. Others provide concrete hard-standings with built in waste gullies.
