Many more families are now considering joining caravan insurance policyholders by taking breaks in the UK rather than abroad, it has been claimed.

Reports abounded over the last month that the volcanic ash cloud has resulted in a number of ill-effects, with planes being grounded and flights cancelled, leaving many holidaymakers and airports in a state of chaotic uncertainty.

Editor of Caravan Times Marcus Dubois has revealed, however, that British tourism could get a boost from the ash cloud uproar.

"Since the chaos surrounding the volcanic ash cloud, we've seen a number of families who would normally take budget holidays abroad consider caravan holidays," he commented.

He went on to say that the trend towards taking a mobile home break has largely been bolstered by the media exposure the holidaying method received last year, when caravanning was revealed as a way to take a budget holiday in the midst of recession.

Meanwhile, caravan park operator Haven recently reported that its bookings rose by 60 per cent for seven-night stays during the May half-term as the ash cloud wreaked havoc in the skies.

A recent study by Travelzoo highlighted that 12 per cent of Britons are now more interested in taking a holiday in the UK since the disruption caused by the volcanic ash cloud.
