A holiday park in Suffolk has become the first in Britain to twin its sanitation facilities with a latrine in a remote part of Africa.
The Waveney River Centre has become a toilet twinner after being informed of the lack of global sanitation by UK charity Cord, which exhibited at the Boat and Caravan Show in Birmingham.
Owners Ruth and James Knight have provided a twin latrine in Giharo Province, Burundi, to match one of their own lavatories in a deluxe washroom block at the park.
The pair revealed that their eco-friendly shower and sanitation facilities are a big draw for some visitors, with one person cancelling a trip to Devon and rebooking at the site on the strength of the showers alone.
When Mrs Knight found out about the scheme, she said she felt she had to give something back, especially as the installation of a latrine costs just £60.
"We are delighted to twin our state-of-the-art facilities with a latrine for a family in Burundi; it's a real reminder of how fortunate we are here in the UK and how essential basic toilets are," commented Mrs Knight.
Famous toilet twinners include soul singer and Cord ambassador Corinne Bailey Rae and magician Paul Daniels.
