Caravan insurance customers may be among motorists who have noticed a difference when driving along some of the UK's roads.
Many roads have been resurfaced and given high-friction and anti-skid surfaces in a bid to save lives through low-cost improvement options.
A report by the Road Safety Foundation found fatal and serious injuries on ten of Britain's most improved roads have declined from 185 between 2003 to 2005 to 63 in 2006 to 2008.
The A40 Llandovery-Carmarthen topped the list of most improved roads with a 74 per cent reduction in fatal and serious road accidents, following a range of low-cost measures such as upgraded junctions, new road markings and extensive resurfacing.
Dr Joanne Hill, director of the Road Safety Foundation and author of the Saving Lives for Less report, commented that public spending cuts mean the emphasis for road budgets must be on saving lives with less money.
"It means systematic attention to detail, prioritising treatment of the highest risk routes most likely to benefit from low-cost, high-return counter-measures," she explained, adding that the report shows how targeting a relatively small mileage of high-risk roads can be improved with good economic returns.
"Too often we pay for emergency services, hospitals and care for the disabled rather than taking easy steps to put road design faults right," Dr Hill added.
A survey by the foundation estimated that £18 billion worth of annual savings in the cost of road crashes are easily attainable.
