A caravan enthusiast has spoken out about the necessity of caravan insurance when motorists take a trip.
Nigel Coppen, spokesman for the Camping and Caravan Club, told the Scotsman that many people are surprised to hear there is no legal requirement to insure a caravan but warned: "Personally, I wouldn't own something that can cost up to £20,000 and not insure it."
Holidays can be ruined by a road accident, but with the protection of caravan insurance, motorists will not be left significantly out of pocket.
Mr Coppen told the newspaper that traffic accident claims are rife when it comes to caravanning expeditions.
"Manoeuvring caravans is not easy, which is why insurers receive numerous claims after vehicles have been reversed into something else, driven through narrow gates, or under low bridges," he explained.
Not connecting the caravan properly to the towing vehicle can also cause problems if it becomes detached while driving, Mr Coppen added.
His comments come as research by Autoglass revealed that potholes on roads are causing damage to vehicles, with nearly one in three motorists (27 per cent) encountering 20 ruts each journey.
Problems such as suspension damage, burst tyres, chipped windscreens and paintwork damage were reported by respondents.
