Holidaymakers are being advised to check the tyres on their vehicles before setting off in order to reduce the risk of having to make a claim on their caravan insurance.

Campaign group TyreSafe recommended that motorists carry out essential checks on tyres, including inspecting the condition of wheels and ensuring they have adequate tread depth and are properly inflated.

The group warned that failing to take precautions could leave drivers facing an increased risk of being stranded by the roadside or involved in a traffic accident because of a tyre-related problem.

TyreSafe chair Stuart Jackson noted that the warm weather can affect driving conditions, resulting in a higher risk of motorists having to make a claim on their caravan insurance policy.

"Heat is an important factor in a tyre's ability to perform properly and keep occupants safe," he commented.

"Checking tyre pressures only takes a few minutes and will make a significant contribution to controlling the tyre's temperature."

Overloaded or under-inflated tyres are more likely to suffer a blowout, which could cause problems when motorists have been driving at high speeds for long periods of time.

A blowout does not only put the driver and passengers at risk but also results in debris being left on the carriageway for other motorists to avoid.
