Black box recorders 'could assist with caravan insurance claims'

A motoring expert has suggested that the installation of a black box recorder in vehicles could tackle the problem of motorists who regularly drive without adequate caravan insurance or other forms of protection.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), said the black boxes could be used as a suitable punishment for those with a history of driving without insurance.
"It'll help simple nose to tail-type shunts, for simple things that people manage to get wrong in insurance claims," he noted.
However, Mr Greig pointed out that a black box recorder would solve all problems relating to claims made on caravan insurance.
"It can't necessarily record all the steps that led up to the incident and actually who was responsible for the incident in the first place," he explained.
His comments come in the light of the announcement that computer hardware company Intel is developing cars fitting with intelligent aircraft-style black box recorders, which are designed to help with police and vehicle insurance matters in the event of a traffic accident.
But Mr Greig raised concerns that there is no real evidence to support the argument that having a black box recorder makes motorists drive better, as the main causes of caravan insurance claims from accidents are failing to look at the road, taking corners too fast and small mistakes when driving.
