Caravan insurance policyholders could be among motorists who are getting caught out by speed cameras to the tune of £87.3 million a year, according to a joint report from the Taxpayers' Alliance and the Drivers' Alliance.

The report calculated that in the financial period 2008-9, some £65.7 million was raised from fixed penalty notices operated by safety camera partnerships across England and Wales, while £19 million came from fines handed out by magistrates for speeding and red light offences.

Another £1.6 million was collected for speeding offences by the Scottish courts and £763,000 was raised from fixed penalty notices detected by cameras in Northern Ireland.

Taxpayers' Alliance chief executive Matthew Elliott attacked the rolling out of speed cameras, stating that the devices "are more about raising money than keeping the roads safe".

"People are sick of being fined under the guise of road safety," he claimed.

The report also suggested that 1.5 million extra casualties have been caused on the roads since speed cameras were introduced.

"Using the road casualty rate from 1978-1990, it can be estimated that 1,555,244 more road casualties have occurred from 1991-2007 than would have if the 1978-1990 trend had continued," the report argued.

The Taxpayers' Alliance committed in its manifesto to hold the government to account and to represent taxpayers' interests.
