Caravan insurance policyholders are being warned to stay aware of the dangers of travelling by road as the main school holidays commence.
A survey by AXA found that caravan insurance is most likely to be needed on a Friday, as accidents occurring on this day are up by 8.5 per cent against the average for the rest of the summer holidays.
Saturdays are the second-worst days for road accidents while Mondays are generally the best, the study found.
Meanwhile, motorists taking their caravan on holiday in Britain should ensure they are not too tired to drive or are not being distracted by poorly stored luggage or fractious children, as these could put them at a higher risk of having an accident.
Craig Staniland from AXA commented: "We would urge people travelling over the holiday period to take every care to prepare properly and drive safely.
The majority of accidents are down to driver error and often conditions when driving to and from a holiday make it all the more stressful for the driver," he noted, adding that forward planning can mitigate some of the pressures to make it a safer journey for motorists.
The research comes as the Highways Agency advises the millions of drivers who will be travelling around the UK this summer to avoid peak travel times and take plenty of breaks to avoid having to make a claim on their caravan insurance.
