Caravan insurance policyholders are being advised to look at the small details of their policy to check what they are covered for before setting off on holiday.
According to moneysupermarket.com, many insurance companies will downgrade a fully comprehensive policy to provide a minimum level of cover required for the particular country caravan insurance policyholders are driving through.
Head of car insurance Steve Sweeney commented that it is a mistake to assume existing cover is valid when driving abroad and advised caravan insurance policyholders to "scour the small print" of their policies.
"If you were unfortunate enough to have a crash while abroad and were only covered for third party, you could find your great holiday getaway turns into an expensive motoring nightmare," he explained.
Mr Sweeney added that it may be worth speaking to caravan insurance providers before departing, so that policies can be amended if necessary.
The advice follows a report by the Daily Mail which reminded caravan enthusiasts that although having insurance is not a legal requirement, it may provide motorists with peace of mind when taking their caravan around Britain or out of the country.
Car insurance may not always cover caravan damage, so it is worth contacting an insurance provider who can talk options through with drivers.
