Car and caravan insurance providers are doing all they can to reduce the impact fraud is having on the increasing premiums of honest motorists, the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has assured drivers.

BIBA technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said: "We don't want innocent people to foot the bill and do all we can to help with that matter."

He noted that as caravan insurance quotes are calculated on a risk-based strategy, law-abiding motorists will still be placed in a higher group if they drive an expensive vehicle, so to prevent having to pay costly caravan insurance premiums it is better to invest in immobilisers and alarms.

Having these devices can help caravan insurance policyholders to gain discounts on the price of their premiums, Mr Trudgill pointed out.

His comments follow the release of research from the AA showing that premiums increased by more than 11 per cent in the previous quarter - the biggest rise since records began - as a result of a rise in fraudulent claims.

Despite this, Mr Trudgill expressed his belief that the current insurance broking process is reasonable for all motorists.

"Insurance is fair to people and is very, very specific to the individual," he added.
