Caravan enthusiasts may be at an increased risk of having to make a claim on their caravan insurance this winter after Cornwall council slashed budgets for road gritting.
The unitary authority said it will not be providing any new salt bins, while town and parish councils will be required to meet the cost of gritting icy side roads should Britain see the same kind of conditions that blighted streets at the beginning of 2010.
Speaking to the Herald, Roadpeace's Jeff Baker argued that Cornwall council should bear the brunt of the costs of gritting roads in order to make it safer for caravan insurance policyholders and other motorists.
The town and parish councils "don't have the vehicles required for such a job", he pointed out.
"The council is putting lives at risk here. Yes, we are going through difficult financial times at the moment but cost cutting should not be at the expense of safety."
However, councillor Graeme Hicks, Cabinet member for highways, transport and planning, maintained that providing salt bins was "ineffective" and amounted to a waste of taxpayers' money.
He explained that there is not enough traffic to crush the salt into the ice in winter and pointed out that it cost £20,000 to keep the bins stocked last winter.
According to the Met Office, the winter of 2009-10 was the coldest in more than 30 years.
