Road safety campaigners have welcomed an announcement from the European Commission that it will try to halve the number of traffic-related deaths by 2020, in news that may reassure caravan insurance policyholders.

Charity RoadSafe's director, Adrian Walsh, said the commission's Road Safety Programme would help save lives through its improved safety developments, which should help to protect caravan insurance policyholders from having to make a claim for damage to their vehicle.

"We are delighted that the commission has formally recognised the latest developments, including electronic stability control and emergency braking systems. There is no doubt that lives will be saved," Mr Walsh commented.

He pointed out that huge improvements have already been made to vehicle safety, including advanced seatbelt and airbag technology that has contributed to a 12 per cent decline in road deaths in the last 12 months.

The commission's programme sets out other safety measures, including mandatory electronic stability warnings in cars and larger motors to reduce the risk of rolling or destabilising, and seatbelt reminders to be placed in all cars and trucks.

Bettering road infrastructure and education for road users will also be part of the programme, as will improved enforcement and smart technology.
