Caravan insurance policyholders taking a trip this summer are being urged to ensure they have as much protection as possible against prospective thieves.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said some 78,000 domestic burglary claims were made last summer by people who had been targeted by criminals, but many of these were preventable.

Caravan insurance customers should avoid leaving windows and doors open when they are not at home, even if they are leaving their house for a few minutes, and the ABI recommended that tools and ladders are safely secured to reduce the risk of a burglar using them to gain entry.

ABI director of general insurance and health Nick Starling commented that everyone wants to relax over the summer, but they should not give burglars an easy target.

"Insurance can of course provide financial compensation, but it cannot compensate for the trauma of a burglary," he noted.

"Being aware of the risks and taking a few simple precautions will ensure that you do not become a victim of summer thieves."

Caravan insurance premiums will also be lower if owners invest in secure parking and safety devices such as alarms and immobilisers, a report in the Daily Mail recently stated.
