Holidaymakers are increasingly deciding to stay in the UK this summer, which may increase the need to take out or update caravan insurance, research has found.

A survey by trade body R3 found over half (56 per cent) of holidaymakers will not be going abroad this year in order to reduce the cost of their summer break, while over a third (38 per cent) said they are actively trying to spend less money on their holiday.

R3 vice-president Frances Coulson commented that the staycation trend has been gaining traction for the last few years.

"The fact that so many people will be holidaying in the UK is good news for the domestic tourism and leisure sector which has been badly hit during the downturn," he pointed out.

Caravan and camping sites could become more popular with people who previously had not considered spending a holiday in Britain.

The research also revealed how travellers aged 16-24 are using money saving methods to get the most out of their holiday, such as reducing the number of trips they take and spending less on eating out while they are travelling.

The findings come after plans for a luxury caravan park in north Wales were given planning permission to proceed.
