Holiday motorists warned to take care

Motorists planning on driving abroad this summer have been warned to ensure their vehicle is in perfect condition and that they bring all necessary paraphernalia with them.

According to a new set of guidelines published by Hertz, anyone planning on taking their vehicle abroad should check its oil, water, windscreen wipers and tyres, as well as making sure their headlights have converters on them.

It is equally important that their vehicle carries a GB sticker, as those that do not are liable for an on-the-spot fine, although this is not necessary within EU member states providing the car has a numberplate bearing a euro-symbol, carpages.co.uk reports.

Moreover motorists are warned to bring with them certain items that could prove valuable, such as a map of the region they are visiting and a toolkit, in the event of repairs of any sort needing to be performed.

It is also necessary in certain countries to carry some items at all times: spare bulbs are obligatory in Italy and Spain, spare keys and a first-aid kit are compulsory in the Czech Republic and you must carry all three in Austria and Slovenia.

It is also vital that drivers do not leave their vehicles vulnerable to theft by leaving valuables on display or leaving doors unlocked while refuelling and that they also bring all relevant documentation with them such as driving licence and proof of insurance.
