Caravan insurance policyholders may be at an increased risk of encountering dangerous driving from other motorists after research showed that more road users are carrying out hazardous behaviour behind the wheel.
A survey by Sainsbury's revealed that just under two-thirds (64 per cent) of British drivers admit to having done something dangerous while driving in the last month, which might increase the likelihood of caravanners having to make a claim on their caravan insurance should they become involved in an accident.
More than one in three (38 per cent) of drivers said they have eaten behind the wheel, while 28 per cent have hit the road while feeling tired.
Some eight per cent of motorists claimed they had driven without wearing a seatbelt and 11 per cent have made a call on a non hands-free mobile phone while driving.
Worryingly, despite heavy legal penalties if caught over the limit, six per cent of motorists questioned admitted to driving after consuming alcohol in the last month.
Ben Tyte, Sainsbury's car insurance manager, commented that people can often become complacent if they drive regularly.
"Often confident drivers can step over the line and drive in a manner that can endanger themselves and other road users," he pointed out.
"We would urge motorists to focus on their driving and not be tempted to engage in anything that may distract them."
The law states that a road user who uses a hand-held phone while driving can face a £60 fine and may receive three points on their licence.
