Caravan insurance policyholders may be among the 6.5 million British holidaymakers planning to take their car abroad over the next 12 months.
But millions of these road users might be breaking the law by not taking road safety precautions, research by Sainsbury's has found.
Some nine per cent of holidaymakers, including caravan insurance customers and other drivers, will be taking their vehicle to France in the coming year, yet one in three (32 per cent) are not considering carrying a reflective jacket with them, despite the fact that this is illegal in the country.
Further to this, 15 per cent will not be bringing a warning triangle and two per cent have admitted to planning on using a speed trap warning radar detector when they are on the road, even though both of these acts are against French law.
Sainsbury's car insurance manager Ben Tyte commented: "Drivers taking their cars abroad need to prepare, not just because they'll be driving on the other side of the road, but because laws differ from country to country."
He pointed out that in Spain, car and caravan insurance policyholders must carry a spare wheel, full set of spare bulbs and the tools to change them at all times.
Meanwhile, driving with a radar detecting device in France could see vehicle owners having their car and device seized, even if the technology is turned off.
