Male caravan insurance customers may be driving an average of 276 extra miles each year due to getting lost, research from Sheilas' Wheels has found.
One in four (26 per cent) males admitted to waiting a good half hour before asking for directions to their destination, while 12 per cent have refused to seek advice from a passerby.
In contrast, female caravan insurance policyholders might be driving a further 256 miles a year more than necessary, the research revealed.
Jacky Brown of the car insurance company commented: "Lost miles can add up and become costly so if you're looking to save on petrol (and the pennies) we suggest you plan and prepare your route well in advance - even if you have a sat nav."
She recommended that caravan insurance customers and other road users have a plan of the journey in their mind so that they are not reliant on the technological device.
In related news, a survey by Sainsbury's found that millions of British drivers, including caravan insurance customers, might be unwittingly breaking the law when they take to the road in foreign countries.
One in three motorists said they would not be taking a reflective jacket in their vehicle and two per cent are planning on using a speed trap warning radar detector when they go on holiday in France, despite the fact that these two acts are illegal in the country.
