The case of a fire which destroyed a caravan and damaged a nearby house is being regarded by police as suspicious.

It is unknown whether the vehicle, which was completely ruined by the flames, was protected by caravan insurance.

Surrey police believe the blaze, which caused thousands of pounds of damage to a property and garage in the town of Ash, was started deliberately and are seeking a man who was seen running away from the scene at around 23:45 BST on Saturday August 21st.

Detective Constable Jackie Green commented: "Thankfully, the elderly occupant of the house escaped injury, she has been left extremely shaken and upset and we are determined to find the person responsible and ensure they are brought to justice."

In news that might highlight the importance of caravan insurance, the fire was started in a four-berth vehicle and caused around £15,000 of damage.

Officers are looking for a suspect described as being white, six-feet tall with tanned skin and greasy dark hair.

He is thought to be aged about 30 years and was weaning beige shorts and a zipped up ski jacket on the night of the incident.

Meanwhile, police in South Yorkshire have been raising owners' awareness of the threat of caravan theft, which might increase the number of caravanners making a claim on their caravan insurance.
