Caravan insurance policyholders have been given advice about safe caravanning and upkeep of their precious vehicles by police in Cornwall.

Officers have been taking to the roads around Camborne to give practical help to caravan insurance customers ahead of the busy bank holiday weekend.

Road users whose vehicles were thought not to be roadworthy were directed to a site off the A30 where traffic officials pointed out potential driving offences.

Some 21 offences were noted and dealt with through remedial action or a fixed penalty notice, while drivers were given leaflets about safe caravanning and advice on accessories that could improve safety and therefore prevent claims being made on owners' caravan insurance.

"Many caravans are only used a few times each year," Camborne Roads Policing Unit explained.

"Combined with inexperience of towing and busy roads during the summer, this creates an increased risk of collisions."

This comes after the Highways Agency released guidance on towing caravans during the summer months, which pointed out that tyres must not be under or over-pressured when they are bearing loads.

Simon Sheldon-Wilson, Highways Agency director of traffic management, said that while most drivers tow vehicles safely, a recent series of incidents in which caravans have crashed or overturned shows that road users must pay attention when towing their vehicle.
