Caravan insurance customers who regularly travel around some of Britain's best beauty spots could take part in a new campaign designed to raise awareness of the UK's rivers.

Launched in partnership by HSBC, the RSPB, WWF-UK, the Angling Trust and the Salmon and Trout Association, Our Rivers Awards aim to get the public more interested in the upkeep and welfare of the country's water spots.

Caravan insurance policyholders and other travellers are being encouraged to vote online for the best and worst river in England and Wales.

The Our Rivers campaign was launched last year just before a report by the Environment Agency found three-quarters (74 per cent) of rivers can be classified as 'Bad', meaning they are polluted and are failing to attract wildlife.

Just five per cent of rivers in England and Wales are described as being in a pristine condition, yet the EU Water Framework Directive requires all rivers in the UK to have 'Good' status or above by 2015.

Ralph Underhill, campaigner for Our Rivers, commented that the online voting will allow caravan insurance customers and other members of the public to get in touch about their favourite river spots.

"This award will be a great celebration of one of our richest wildlife habitats - and one that everyone can enjoy because no-one is more than a few minutes from a river, stream or brook."

Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo has reported that the River Mersey has cleaned up its act and is now home to a variety of wildlife, including fish, seals and even porpoises.
