Children raise cost of caravan trips

British travellers who take a child with them for a caravan holiday abroad could find this greatly increases the cost of their trip, according to a new report.

Parents with an average sized family of just two children can expect to spend an incredible £1,850 on them when they take them overseas for a fortnight, although this can vary strongly depending on where they come from in the UK.

This regional disparity is particularly strong between the Midlands, where parents spend only £825 per child on average and Scotland, where they spend as much as £1,625 per child, according to NatWest's survey.

The bank's Robin Cockburn commented that "with 68 per cent of parents admitting to giving in to their kids requests to treats more easily when on holiday, it seems they aren't really helping themselves in keeping down the costs of their trip abroad".

Parents will tend to take their kids with them on holiday from before they have even had their first birthday until they are at least 16 years old, meaning they will have to spend more than £19,000 in total taking just one child abroad.

The major contributory to the expense of taking a child on holiday is that of travel and accommodation, which costs £200 on average, as well as that of feeding them (£100) and of keeping them entertained with activities and trips (another £100).
