Musicians better off by caravan

Any touring musicians might well be better off travelling by caravan so as to avoid the restrictions they would face if they went by air instead, a new report suggests.

With new security measures being implemented on planes due to the current heightened terror threat, musicians will now no longer be able to carry their instruments on board with them.

Instead, those who do choose to fly with their instrument will have to have it placed in the aircraft hold, according to Allianz Cornhill, where it could potentially incur impact damage or be spoiled through exposure to inconstant temperatures.

John Feaver, marketing controller for musical insurance, explained: "Problems arise for musicians studying abroad or those travelling professionally for foreign concerts and tours.

"Having to turn down jobs or to cancel at the last minute will obviously have an adverse effect on their income."

Tighter security measures have been in place on aircraft since police foiled an alleged terror plot to blow up several transatlantic flights, with passengers now only allowed to bring a minimal amount of hand luggage on board with them.

An official from the Department for Transport recently told the Guardian that these restrictions are likely to continue until baggage checking equipment can be enhanced to better counter the present terror threat.
