New technology to help van drivers
Van drivers operating in the north-west of England could find their work made a lot easier following a major technological upgrade on the region's major roadways.
Work is now set to start on the installation of the £12.5 million TechMAC system, which will enable far quicker maintenance of electronic message boards, underground traffic sensors and roadside phones on several key motorways running through the region.
Thanks to its 24-hour surveillance network, faults will now be detected far more rapidly, reducing response times from as long as four hours in some cases to around ten minutes, thereby cutting congestion and improving road safety in the process.
Highways Agency project manager Keith Hill claimed: "This contract will keep the north-west at the cutting edge of technology and will continue to keep drivers safe and well informed on our roads.
"What this scheme will do is provide a faster, more efficient service for drivers and continually look to improve conditions for motorists."
This is only the second time that this sort of system has been rolled out in the UK and it means that the north-west will contain around a quarter of the nation's roadside technology once the installation is completed.
Last month the Freight Transport Association included the M6, which is one of the motorways that will be improved by the TechMAC project, in a list of vital roadways affected by bottlenecks that hinder goods conveyance in the UK today.
