Van firms urged to get ready

Van operators could prove woefully unprepared if a disaster struck their firm, a new report has warned, indicating the importance of having an adequate insurance policy.

Nearly one in five UK small businesses are hit with a major disruption every year, of which an estimated four out of five are forced to close down within the next year and a half as a result.

The absence of effective planning for dealing with these incidents is at the root of the problem, according to the British Insurance Brokers Association, with a considerable number of companies lacking protection against terrorism, flooding, storms and fires.

Chief executive Eric Galbraith explained: "Our research reveals an incredibly worrying trend amongst the essential small business sector in the UK.

"Too many businesses are putting themselves and their employees' futures at risk by failing put in place proper continuity plans should the unexpected happen."

With 4.3 million small firms in the UK, employing 12 million people, Mr Galbraith stressed that the nation's economy will suffer if these companies remain complacent and therefore urged them to ensure that they are properly covered.

The need for van insurance in particular was highlighted in a study last summer by More Than, which showed that two out of five of these commercial vehicles are subjected to wilful criminal damage each year, at a collective cost of £620 million to British business.
