Homeowners need to keep their piping hot
Given the extremely wintry conditions seen in Britain of late, homeowners are being advised to ensure that their pipes do not expand and crack in cold temperatures.
It is believed that UK households could be affected by leaky tubing in their lofts if they are not properly insulated, especially in the case of older properties that lack roofing beneath their tiles.
According to Halifax's report, pipes and water tanks above the loft's insulating layer will not be kept warm by heat rising from inside the home, so it is up to householders to take steps to rectify this situation.
Home insurance underwriter Vicky Emmott explained: "Water from a burst pipe within a loft space can very quickly cause damage to plaster ceilings, wall plaster, kitchen units, electrical wiring and decoration, as well as carpets, beds, electrical items and other contents within a property.
"So by simply insulating your pipes you can help to protect yourself from unwanted disasters this winter."
Householders are also advised that, in the event that their pipes do freeze over, they should turn off the water supply from the stopcock, before turning on all the taps so as to drain out their system.
A recent study by Lloyds TSB estimated that there will be a 15 per cent increase in the number of claims made for burst pipes during the first quarter of this year, with the damage caused to individual households costing around £2,500 on average to repair.
