Everybody wants van

Van take-up increased last month, according to new figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), with larger models clearly driving growth.

Nearly 21,700 light commercial vehicles were registered in January, which was up by 1.2 per cent year-on-year, while registrations for the past 12 months also increased and now stand at over 327,400.

Medium-sized vans saw the biggest growth during this period, up by 73.1 per cent to almost 3,800, but heavier models continue to account for the largest proportion of market share, with just short of 13,200 registered in the first month of 2007.

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said of the figures: "The van sector continued its growth, with total registrations up on January 2006, particularly for heavier vans and pick-ups."

However, lighter vans did not fare so well, with January's monthly figure of around 3,500 down by fully 36.2 per cent on the same month in 2006, with less than 67,400 registered in the entirety of the past year.

This follows the release of new statistics from the SMMT showing that the take-up of cars has so far also risen slightly in 2007, with more than 165,600 new models listed in January - an increase of five per cent year-on-year.
