Van owners say the future's bright

Britain's van owners are hugely optimistic about their business prospects for the coming year and expect things to only get better, judging by new figures.

Roughly a third of self-employed people are very confident about the year ahead and a similar proportion say they are quite confident, whereas only one in 50 claim to be wholly pessimistic about 2007.

Moreover, nearly half of all independent businesspeople expect their turnover to grow over the course of this year, Kensington's index showed, while less than one in ten anticipate a decline in their earnings.

Director of marketing Ian Giles explained: "It's a benign economic environment for the self-employed and this is reflected in the high confidence levels we have seen in the index.

"But, with uncertainty hanging over the future of the base rate, business owners are understandably cautious when it comes to stretching their finances."

Indeed, when asked if they were thinking of spending more on things like vehicles, a quarter said that they definitely would be and a quarter said that they certainly would not.

This general cautiousness on the part of van firms was indicated by recent figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which showed a 1.2 per cent year-on-year rise in light commercial vehicle sales in January.
