Everybody needs good neighbours
Many Britons long for a tighter-knit neighbourhood and the greater security that it could offer their home, a new survey has shown.
More than half of UK homeowners still enjoy chatting with the people next-door over the garden fence and almost one in four regularly have tea with the neighbours, but many nonetheless claim that there has been a decline in the neighbourly spirit of their area.
Indeed, four out of five Brits feel that their home would be safer from crime if they knew their neighbours better, according to Churchill's poll, but many are put off making contact by problems with badly behaved teens and noise levels.
Head of home insurance Martin Scott commented: "Our research clearly shows that social trends such as longer working hours and commuting longer distances, people moving home more frequently and families enjoying more sedentary leisure activities within the home can affect the relationships that we hold with our neighbours."
However, many householders are themselves lacking in neighbourly good will, with nearly three quarters saying they would do nothing if they heard the burglar alarm next-door sounding.
These findings echo a study conducted by Allianz & Cornhill last summer, which showed that one in three homeowners do not even know their neighbour's name and three out of five would not ask theirs to look after their house while they were on holiday.
