More van drivers in jobs
Job opportunities are improving for van drivers, new government figures have suggested, as the number of people in employment has been on the up of late.
Statistics from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) show that the number of people in work in Britain increased by 51,000 in the past quarter, as well as by 278,000 year-on-year.
During the past three months, unemployment has also fallen by 23,000, although it is still in excess of what it was a year ago, while the number of people not actively seeking work is down by 94,000 over the past year.
Employment minister Jim Murphy commented: "Today's figures tell a strong story: numbers on each of the main benefits - jobseeker's allowance, incapacity benefits and lone parent benefits - are falling, employment is up and unemployment is down.
"Our reforms to the welfare state are working: more people are coming off benefits, looking for work and taking up jobs."
He added that the DWP's aim is to get national employment up to the 80 per cent mark, of which he said a major aspect would be to get at least one million older people back into work.
Despite the growth in employment, there are still plenty of job opportunities available, with figures from the Office of National Statistics showing that there were well over 600,000 vacancies recorded over the past three months.
