Global warming to boost winter caravanning?

Many Brits may be moved in future to go caravanning for their winter holidays, as a new study predicts that climate change will negatively impact the popularity of skiing trips.

It is estimated that nearly a third of the snow in the Alps will have disappeared by 2030 because of rising temperatures, with only three out of five of the existing resorts expected to be able to offer consistently good skiing conditions by then.

The price of winter sports holidays are therefore likely to skyrocket, Halifax's report has claimed, with unaffected resorts forced to bring in quota systems that will ultimately turn skiing back into very much an elitist sport.

Head of travel insurance pricing David Rochester warned: "British winter sports enthusiasts face an uncertain future if global temperatures continue to rise.

"The availability and accessibility of winter resorts is likely to decrease markedly as the snowline rises. In less than 25 years, winter package holidays and chalet breaks may be regarded as expensive luxuries."

Skiing's loss could prove to be caravanning's gain, with another study by Halifax having already suggested that the take-up of UK holidays could well be boosted by rising temperatures across the globe.

Holidaymakers who do opt for a domestic caravan trip rather than a vacation abroad could ironically help to prevent climate change, with one in ten Brits willing to cut down on their flying to help reduce emissions, according to a recent survey by Prudential.
