FTA: Exclude delivery vans from charge zone
Vans making important deliveries within the capital should not have to pay for travelling through it, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) has opined.
With London's congestion charge zone having been expanded westwards at the start of this week, the FTA has argued that companies based in or supplying the city will be forced to pay out even more in the wake of this change.
The organisation has therefore renewed its call for "essential" commercial goods vehicles to be excluded from the charge, arguing that it costs businesses hundreds of millions of pounds, but that the latest extension will have only a negligible impact on journey times.
Head of policy for London Gordon Telling explained: "Goods vehicles come into the charge zone because they have no choice.
"Shops, offices, restaurants, pubs and every other commercial establishment all have to be served. Without the goods vehicle they could not function and nor could London."
He claimed that it was hypocritical to allow buses and taxis to run free of charge on the grounds that they are vital to the capital when vans and other goods vehicles are also crucial but are nonetheless forced to pay up.
The FTA has repeatedly urged for the rights of commercial vehicles to be protected against the growth of passenger transport and has campaigned for anti-congestion measures to be implemented outside London on a number of Britain's motorways.
