Not so good for van drivers to talk
Van drivers who insist on making business calls while on the road could see higher insurance premiums eaten into their profits, a new report has suggested.
The government has doubled the fine for using a mobile phone while driving to £60, yet according to moneysupermarket.com's new study, more than a third of motorists say that this will not deter them from making calls when they are behind the wheel.
However, managing director Richard Mason has warned that the three points drivers will accrue on their license for this offence could also carry a financial penalty, should their insurer opt to raise their premium as a result.
He warned: "Using a mobile phone while driving has become worryingly commonplace, but as well as the safety issues there will now be financial consequences for those who get caught.
"With some insurers indicating they will increase motor premiums this year, don't give them another excuse to hike up your payments unnecessarily."
Mr Mason suggested that motorists who have to use their phone while on the road could invest in a hands-free kit, which cost upwards of £5 and are not illegal to use when driving.
A study by Tesco's back in 2005 showed that many van drivers are already well acquainted with this aspect of road etiquette, with nearly a third having installed this sort of technology in their vehicle.
