Homeowners have to be riders on the storm

Britons have seen their homes repeatedly hit by bad weather so far in 2007, but a new report shows that their wallets could take a buffeting too without adequate insurance.

With severe winds, rain and even snow plaguing the nation during the first few weeks of the year, the number of homes affected by storm damage rose 158 per cent year-on-year in January, at a collective cost of £300 million.

Indeed, bad weather has accounted for three out of five home insurance claims so far at an average cost of £500 each, but Barclays' report warns that a minority of householders may have to pay for the damage themselves because they are not sufficiently covered.

Insurance marketing director Mark Till commented: "The weather is always a favourite topic of conversation for us Brits, but the extremes we have experienced in the last two months have kept everyone on their toes."

He explained that the extent of destruction caused by storms often varies, but that in the worst cases a suitable insurance policy is vital in helping homeowners to repair all the damage and to get their lives back to normal.

Moreover, a recent study by the AA has shown that buildings and contents premiums have both practically static over the past decade or so, although it also warned that severe storms could push up the cost of insurance before the year is out.
