Caravanners won't stand for shoddy insurance

Brits heading off to an overseas caravan site at some stage this year will appreciate government efforts to ensure they are adequately insured, judging by a new survey.

The Treasury is currently looking into ways of protecting holidaymakers from travel agencies who also sell them insurance for their trip but without adequately explaining the terms of their policy.

Now research from the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has found that nearly all vacationers support government action, which chief executive Eric Galbraith claims is essential as travellers must know the extent of their cover before setting off.

He explained: "Travel insurance is vital when we jet off on our holidays and it is the role of the provider to ensure that consumers are both fully covered and understand the limits of their policies.

"BIBA brokers and the rest of the regulated industry has been fulfilling this commitment for years and the government's proposals would ensure that travel agents and tour operators fall into line."

Worryingly in today's climate, BIBA also found that more than seven out of ten travel agents did not inform holidaymakers whom they sold insurance to whether their policy would cover them in the eventuality of a terrorist attack.

Moreover, nearly half did not even inform the traveller of their policy excess, while the majority did not tell the policyholder how to go about making a claim or filing a complaint.
