Caravanning 'could be eco-friendly
The National Caravan Council (NCC) has launched a campaign to promote the green credentials of caravan holidays.
It has produced statistics that demonstrate a family heading off on a caravan holiday can produce significantly lower carbon emissions than one making the same journey by plane.
The NCC is so confident people will be impressed by the figures that it has unveiled a new website which contains a comparison tool designed to show the environmental impact of different forms of transport.
Users need simply input details of the distance they intend to travel and the type of car and touring caravan they would use for the journey.
The site will use the information to calculate the carbon footprint of that specific journey, together with the emissions created by making the same journey via flight, rail or coach.
John Lally, the NCC's director general, told the Press Association travellers may be surprised by some of the results.
"It is a bit of a myth that you need a large, fuel-hungry car to tow. Diesel Mondeos and Passats have been voted towcars of the year. You just need to make sure your car and caravan are properly matched," he explained.
As well as representing the interests of the caravan industry, the NCC provides owners with details of security products that may help them to reduce the risk of falling victim to crime and having to interrupt their holiday in order to make a claim on their touring caravan insurance.
