Occupational driving study reveals sleep problem
New research has revealed that a large number of drivers who take to the road as part of their job have difficulty staying awake behind the wheel.
According to findings from breakdown firm Green Flag in conjunction with road safety charity Brake, one in ten people who travel at work has fallen asleep in the past 12 months.
It may be that this is a particular problem for those who take long trips, perhaps trailing a motor home to a holiday destination, risking their caravan insurance policies in the process.
The research also found that four per cent of motorists who do not drive as part of their job admitted to the act.
According to Brake head of campaigns Cathy Keller, something needs to be done to cut down on the problem.
"Getting behind the wheel when you've not had enough sleep is deadly ... Too many people are dying," said the official.
A man in Doncaster has been jailed for four years after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing, Doncaster Today reports.
The driver's girlfriend and two friends were killed in the collision, it added.
