Europe's largest caravan park spends £1m on defence

Close to 3,000 motor homes in West Sussex are to be protected as part of a £1 million sea defence programme, it has been reported.

The Argus comments that John Bunn, owner of Bunn Leisure's West Sands Caravan Site on Medmerry Beach in Selsey is to spend the money in order to ensure that the vehicles are not hit by advancing tide.

Mr Bunn has been "forced to do this" after the service provided by the Environment Agency has been "failing", according Dee Caldwell from Ham Residents Group, it added.

And the owner has commented on the extent of the work required, which the Argus reports will be completed before the end of 2009 and is expected to last for close to 20 years.

It may be that the scheme also protects motor home owners with caravan insurance, as they might not have to make claims.

Mr Bunn said: "It will involve a huge amount of rock and planning permission, although the Environment Agency could do it themselves if they wanted to."

The Skegness Standard reports that four caravans were attacked at Hardy's Caravan Site on Anchor Lane in Ingoldmells in the week between Christmas and new year.
